october

In the grand scheme of things, one month is really not very long. But a month is actually a significant amount of time for a college student considering a month is 1/4 of a semester and 1/32 of one's entire college career (excluding those glorious summer breaks). In light of this, I hope to do my very best to recap October for the sake of cherishing a short season in 'the best times of my life.'

This month, I...

1 - interviewed for 4 different summer internship positions
For 2 years I have watched suited, decked-out students walk in and out of the interviewing suites in the business school and have always been curious to know what it would take for me to actually be interested enough to utilize those facilities. In fact, I have always felt so far removed from students who actively engage in recruiting that I began to wonder if I was even capable of presenting myself as an intelligent, capable, and interested candidate to companies who are interested in hiring only the "best and the brightest." However, my heart has felt an urgency this semester to seek an internship position with a distinguished firm that corresponds with the gifts, skills, and academic opportunities the Lord has given me. I feel like God has confirmed His desire for me to pursue this because He has so quickly broadened my understanding of business and market knowledge since the start of the semester. I like to compare my process of learning to a puzzle. In the last 2 years, I have accumulated tens of hundreds of "puzzle pieces" due to my frequent exposure to the business school and all its resources. With the help of numerous company info sessions I have sat through, my brilliant Finance professor, and testimonies from my boyfriend's experiences on Wall Street, this semester has really served as a time for me to start to connect the pieces. I applied for several different internships and was asked to interview with 4 of those firms. With each interview, I am becoming more and more confident in the art of communicating how my unique experiences will add value to firms. The Lord recently granted me the opportunity to be invited back for a second interview with one of the companies and I am currently waiting on the results. It is still amazing to me when I think about how quickly I have become "that girl" who carts a business suit to campus 2-3 times a week and enjoys hearing others' perspectives on recent market events. Even so, I know it's all for a reason.

2 - road tripped to Dallas for OU weekend
What a wonderful break in the middle of such a stressful month! One of my amazing friends, who I led a community group with last year, opened up her house to me to stay for the weekend and it was such a treat to catch up her and her family throughout the weekend. And of course, I got to see my sweet boyfriend who flew in to hang out with friends and family. Some of the highlights of the trip were
a. cheering on Texas during the Red River Shootout with Daniel's high school friends while stuffing myself with burgers, hot dogs and chips & queso
b. going on a dress-up dinner date with Daniel in Plano
c. eating breakfast with friends by the pool of my friend's house

3 - filled out an extensive application for the Financial Analyst Program in the business school
Students in the Financial Analyst Program work closely with the MBAs and help them make decisions regarding the 2 funds that they manage. Students in the FAP are expected to do a lot of in-depth analysis and the work is very project based. I would love to be a part of this team because it would finally allow me to see the finance concepts I'm just now being exposed to in my classes come to life in a very tangible way. I would get to learn the ins and outs of Excel and most importantly, it would provide a platform for me to build relationships with other students who may or may not possess the joy of knowing Christ. Even though I would love to be a part of the FAP, I've come to new understanding this semester that God has a plan for me that far exceeds anything I could dream for myself. If I am not selected, I can still take joy in knowing that God has something greater in mind for me.

4 - planned and executed the annual Ignite reunion
This year, the other execs and I decided to put together a football tailgate as our reunion activity. We also decided to double the reunion as a fundraiser so we could start working towards our financial goals as early as possible. Because of her connections, the director was able to get 2 footballs signed by the head coach and we planned to auction the footballs off to the rich alum who would be tailgating around us. However, I don't think anyone anticipated how much money those footballs would bring in - we ended up raising almost $600! We also had to publicize the event so we had a logo created for the event and sent it out to the staff and old campers. One thing I was personally proud of was the fact that we bought just enough food to feed everyone with minimal leftovers. It was satisfying. I think everyone had a great time and it was so fun to see the campers from this year mingling and having a great time.

5 - made 2 special trips home to watch my brother play Varsity football and my sister run in a district cross country meet
I never made the Varsity soccer team in high school because I quit playing after my Junior year. Even though I have no regrets about that decision, I was always curious to know what it would have been like to play in a high school Varsity game. How cool is it that my brother and sister will get to sport awesome lettermen jackets with their friends for the rest of the school year and beyond? I can't express what a blessing it was to watch them perform in their perspective athletic competitions. I'm so proud of them for the efforts they put forth to get to this point but so much more than that, I'm proud of the way they've maintained integrity and strived to attain to the standard of holiness Christ commands us as they lived life in front of their friends and teammates.

8 - got through 4 tests, 5 quizzes, 6 group projects, and 2 papers
Enough said. That was rough.
