no place like (my college) home
Well, I am now a college student who has official left the college dorm life. I really do enjoy the freedom and independence that comes with living in a house. There are many benefits: I don't have to punch in a 4 digit code every time I want to use the bathroom, I don't have a curfew, and I don't have to swipe my ID card whenever I enter my house. Even so, being in a house is very different and there are several things I am still trying to get used to:
1. conserving electricity
This was never a concern of mine in the past. I feel like my roommate personifies a shadow, of sorts, as she is constantly turning off lights and water faucets behind me. I expect to be more cognizant of my actions when our first water and electricity bills come in.
2. TV
Luckily, all my roommates are committed to studying and doing well in their classes but even so, I had never heard of "Gossip Girl" or "90210" until this year...
3. close proximity
The aged walls in our house happen to be fairly thin so all my roommates are keenly aware of the amount of hours I spend on the phone. I think I have thoroughly convinced them all that I am crazy and let's be honest... I don't blame them. I guess I was in even closer proximity last year but my former roommate shared the same sentiments as she also had a long-distance boyfriend.
4. food
Food is expensive. Not only that, but trying to feed myself is way more challenging than I ever expected! I like to attribute my increased appetite to more consistent exercise but this is both good and bad. It seems like no matter what I make for myself to eat, I can never stay full for more than 2 hours. And the things that I do choose to make usually contain a great degree of processed ingredients. I am so jealous of friends who have a seemingly ingrained knowledge of "simple" dishes like pasta and grilled chicken and green bean casserole . I wouldn't even know where to begin if someone asked me to "marinate" a piece of meat. Maybe it just takes a lot of trial and error but in that case, refer to sentence #1 of this paragraph.
5. roaches
Unfortunately, I am without the comforting presence of fearless males like my dad who laughs hysterically at my inability to remain within 2 rooms of the roach-killing episode. However, I should mention that my roommate happens to possess awe-inspiring audacity by the way she clamps down on live roaches with a paper towel-lined hand.
Aside from all these things, I feel very blessed to be surrounded by 3 beautiful, amazing, godly girls and I'm very excited to learn more about their hearts and experience all the things God has to show me through living with them this year.
